In May, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan filed applications for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Benny Gantz, and other senior Israeli officials for their roles in the ongoing conflict with Hamas. The court also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in Gaza in October. Another arrest warrant was issued for Mohammed Deif, an alleged architect of a terror attack in October. Israel claimed to have killed Deif earlier in the year. The ICC has been investigating possible war crimes by both Israel and Palestinian militants since the 2014 Israel-Hamas war. Netanyahu criticized Khan as a “rogue prosecutor,” while Israeli officials condemned the arrest warrants as a “dark day for justice” and “absurd.” Former Israeli ambassador to the U.N. Gilad Erdan called for a new international system led by countries dedicated to Western values and fighting terrorism. The situation is still developing, and updates are expected.
