Irwin County Coach Casey Soliday on Team’s Playoff Journey and GHSA Competitive Balance Concerns
In an interview, Irwin County football coach Casey Soliday reflected on his team’s impressive 10-1 season, despite challenges ahead as they navigate the playoffs. Currently ranked No. 3 in Class A Division II, Irwin County is seeded third in their region, which diminishes the likelihood of securing home playoff games. Their only loss came against Clinch County, and the team emerged victorious in the first round of playoffs against eighth-ranked Greene County, winning 42-7.
“Defensively, we played our best game of the year, limiting Greene County to just 226 total yards,” Soliday noted. The team’s next challenge will be away against Region 1 champion Early County, showcasing the difficulties of competing on the road.
Regarding the playoff tiebreakers that affected their seeding, Soliday expressed understanding of the situation, stating, “If we’d handled our business, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.” He acknowledged the importance of home games for both players and the community but emphasized the necessity of preparing for each matchup regardless of location.
The interview also highlighted standout player Shane Marshall, who has rushed for over 1,450 yards this season. Coach Soliday praised Marshall’s tenacity and athleticism, comparing him favorably to past Irwin County running backs.
Additionally, Coach Soliday expressed his reservations about the GHSA’s proposed competitive-balance model, which classifies teams based on overall sports success rather than just enrollment. He voiced concerns about the potential negative impacts on teams and athletes, emphasizing, “I’m not a fan of the competitive-balance thing. It could create more problems than it solves.”
With the playoffs ahead, Soliday aims to make the most of the remaining games, embracing the challenges in pursuit of a state championship.
