Venezuelan Immigrant Sentenced to Life for Murder of Georgia Nursing Student
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan man, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University. The sentencing came after a trial presided over by Judge H. Patrick Haggard, who found Ibarra guilty on all 10 counts, including malice murder and kidnapping with bodily injury.
Riley was killed on February 22 while jogging on the University of Georgia campus. Prosecutors described the harrowing scene, suggesting Ibarra attacked Riley during an attempted sexual assault. Her family’s emotional pleas for justice highlighted their profound grief, with her mother calling Ibarra "sick" and "twisted." They expressed their hope that he would never again pose a threat to society.
Ibarra, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2022, did not react to the victims’ family members as they spoke. His defense sought to introduce reasonable doubt, suggesting that evidence against him was circumstantial, while the prosecution maintained that extensive forensic, digital, and video evidence firmly linked him to the crime.
The case, which sparked national discussions about immigration, saw political figures, including President-elect Donald Trump, commenting on the implications of Ibarra’s illegal status on the crime. Trump praised the guilty verdict, calling for stricter border control.
Ibarra’s DNA matched that found under Riley’s fingernails, and surveillance footage placed him at the scene. Despite the defense’s arguments, the jury’s clear verdict underscored the strong evidence against him.
