A police officer and a suspected shooter were injured in an incident at a building in Midtown Atlanta that houses a Four Seasons hotel and residences. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect’s injuries were unspecified. The shooter, identified as 70-year-old Jay Stevens Berger, fired shots from the 33rd floor, using multiple firearms. Police responded to a dispute between a building worker and the man, attempting to negotiate with him. The 33rd floor was evacuated, and police ultimately breached the unit’s door to take the suspect into custody. The injured were not confirmed to have been struck by gunfire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the officers’ response since force was used. The shelter-in-place order at the high-rise was lifted, and police asked people to avoid the area for investigation. The incident occurred within the residential condominiums of the building, not the hotel managed by Four Seasons. The safety and security of guests and employees is the top priority for the Four Seasons. The incident involved over 15 shots fired, with the gunman wearing what appeared to be a gas mask. The police department removed the shelter-in-place order, confirming the suspect is in custody. The building houses 244 hotel rooms, 96 residences, and 97,000 square feet of office space.
