Press Release: GSU’s Housing Initiative for Homeless Individuals Gains Momentum
Georgia State University (GSU) is progressing with a new initiative aimed at addressing homelessness and the associated public health crises in Atlanta. Shannon Self-Brown, co-leader of the initiative, emphasized the high rates of chronic health conditions among the homeless population, often exacerbated by limited access to healthcare and basic needs, as well as the impacts of racism and discrimination.
To tackle these challenges, GSU plans to engage graduate students in data collection related to food security and mental health resources. Initiatives include evaluating mobile healthcare services, exploring harm reduction strategies, and establishing peer support programs. “Homelessness is a public health crisis,” noted Cathryn Vassell, CEO of Partners for Home, indicating the need for localized research to identify risk factors such as low income and past evictions.
With homelessness exacerbated during the pandemic, GSU’s initiative seeks to provide a comprehensive approach by partnering with over 30 local organizations. The program aims to assess existing services and identify gaps, offering training to graduate students to enhance their skills in public health interventions.
April Ballard, co-leader of the GSU center, highlighted public health concerns associated with homelessness, including hygiene, substance abuse, and trauma. The center draws inspiration from similar successful programs across the country and is funded by a grant from philanthropist Catherine Henson.
According to Partners for HOME’s recent survey, 67% of the homeless population in Atlanta reported having a disability, and a significant portion struggles with serious mental illness and substance abuse. This initiative at GSU aims to equip the next generation of public health professionals to make impactful changes in the lives of those experiencing homelessness.
