Mariners Secure First Win of the Season Under New Coach Harris
COCHRAN, Ga. – In an exciting start to the 2024-25 season, the College of Coastal Georgia women’s basketball team celebrated a 62-48 victory over Middle Georgia State Knights on Tuesday night, marking interim head coach Corey Harris’ inaugural win at the collegiate level.
The game commenced with the Knights securing a brief 4-0 lead, thanks to Jaida Fitzgerald’s free throws and a layup. However, the Mariners quickly responded, courtesy of Morgon Webb, who ignited a scoring streak. As the teams battled for supremacy, Maylei Noreika’s three-pointer helped the Mariners seize an 8-7 lead, from which they never looked back in the first half.
After a tightly contested first quarter ending 18-11, the Mariners extended their lead to 10 points in the second. Despite a late surge from the Knights, who cut the deficit to four points, the Mariners managed to rely on their solid defense, closing out the half leading 33-25.
Webb led the scoring with 10 points at halftime, followed by Tyler Butler and Taylor Gardner with eight points each. Notably, the Mariners showcased an impressive shooting performance, securing 42% from the field compared to the Knights’ 30%.
In the second half, the Mariners erupted with a 10-3 run, allowing them to maintain control of the game. Although the Knights attempted a comeback in the final quarter, the Mariners remained steadfast, closing the game with free throws from Gardner to secure the 62-48 victory.
Webb finished with a game-high 18 points, while Butler recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. The Mariners aim to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next matchup against Brewton Parker Barons on November 4, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
