A controversial campaign mailer targeting Georgia State Senate candidate Ashwin Ramaswami has sparked a heated exchange between him and incumbent Shawn Still. The mailer, which accuses Ramaswami of inappropriate behavior with teenagers, has been labeled as fearmongering by Ramaswami. Still denies coordinating with the PAC responsible for the mailers but criticizes Ramaswami’s request for students’ names as “creepy and weird.”
The situation escalated when Ramaswami received a death threat following the mailer distribution, leading to safety concerns for him and his campaign staff. Ramaswami also accused Still of circulating racist ads that darkened his skin and demanded a public apology and retraction.
Still, on the other hand, defended his actions and condemned political violence while accusing Ramaswami of extreme campaigning tactics. Still attributes the hostility between them to his indictment in a 2023 case involving former President Donald Trump. Ramaswami, who entered the race in response to Still’s indictment, has focused his campaign on this issue.
The unresolved legal case against Still and the potential delay due to an upcoming court hearing could impact the Senate race. Despite the ongoing controversy, both candidates continue to campaign vigorously in Georgia’s 48th Senate District, with Ramaswami raising a considerable amount of funds.
