Thailand has reopened three of its marine national parks, Similan National Park, Surin Islands National Park, and Laem Son National Park, after a six-month closure due to environmental concerns. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has welcomed back visitors to these parks, situated in the Andaman Sea within Phang Nga Province. The parks will be open from October 15, 2024, to May 15, 2025, before closing again for conservation efforts. The closures aimed to protect marine life from challenges posed by rising sea temperatures and increased footfall.
These Thai marine national parks offer visitors a chance to embrace nature and participate in adventurous activities such as snorkelling, diving, and cultural events. Laem Son National Park, situated in Ranong and Phang Nga provinces, is known for its sugary beaches and vibrant coral reefs, making it a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkelling. Similan National Park is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and thriving corals, making it one of the best diving and snorkelling destinations in Thailand. Surin Islands National Park offers opportunities for water sports and a chance to spot marine species like whale sharks.
With a total of 156 national parks, Thailand is one of the most biodiverse countries in Asia. The temporary closures of these parks allow for ecological recovery and conservation. Visitors are encouraged to explore the beauty of these marine national parks while respecting and preserving the natural environment.
