Raymond Childs III, a 21-year-old man from Indianapolis, was found guilty of six counts of murder, including the deaths of five people, following a shooting incident in January 2021. The victims included his father, stepmother, stepsister, stepbrother, and his brother’s girlfriend who was nearly due to give birth. The attack stemmed from an argument over Childs staying out late. Childs methodically went from room to room, shooting the victims, with his 15-year-old brother being the only survivor after fleeing the house. Childs was also convicted of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license.
The trial, which lasted five days, resulted in a conviction after a mistrial was declared in his first trial due to a witness verbally confronting Childs in front of the jury. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed relief at the verdict, describing the crime as unfathomable and providing justice for the victims. Childs’ sentencing was scheduled for January 7, where he faces 40 to 65 years in prison for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for attempted murder, and one to six years for the handgun charge. His attorney did not comment immediately following the verdict.
The tragic incident has been a difficult journey for the families and friends of the victims, but the dedication of the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses remained steadfast despite the challenges faced throughout the legal process.
