The criminal dubbed as the ‘Penguin Bandit’ who committed multiple bank robberies in Colorado has been sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

“The Penguin Bandit,” identified as Samuel Richard Ruthstrom, was sentenced to more than 13 years in federal prison for robbing multiple banks in the Denver area. Ruthstrom, 42, pleaded guilty to robbing four banks and attempting to rob a fifth within a few weeks. He was sentenced to 160 months for five counts of bank robbery, along with three years of supervised release and restitution. U.S. Attorney Matt Kirsch praised the sentence, calling repeat offenders a menace to communities. The Denver Police Department and FBI task force investigated Ruthstrom’s crimes. He wore a ski mask during robberies, demanding money from tellers. Ruthstrom’s first robbery netted him $385, with subsequent robberies at other banks earning him varying amounts of money. He was given the moniker “Penguin Bandit” due to his heavy build and distinctive walk. A tip identifying Ruthstrom led to his arrest, with evidence such as surveillance footage, phone records, and his vehicle linking him to the crimes. Ruthstrom was on parole for a previous burglary conviction at the time of the robberies. The judge in the case commended law enforcement for their quick and efficient handling of the investigation. Ruthstrom’s attorney declined to comment on the case.
