Source: Israel is contemplating Egyptian proposal for a two-week truce with Hamas

Israeli officials are considering an Egyptian proposal for a small-scale cease-fire deal with Hamas in Gaza in an effort to build momentum for a larger agreement. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Israel as part of a Middle East tour to renew talks for a comprehensive deal following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Israel continues its offensive in northern Gaza, forcing thousands to flee, and has invaded southern Lebanon as well.

The Egyptian proposal calls for a two-week truce in Gaza in exchange for the release of six Israeli hostages. It was suggested by the new head of Egyptian intelligence, Hassan Mahmoud Rashad. The Israeli official speaking on the condition of anonymity stated that efforts for a larger deal have faced challenges, and a smaller agreement could help build momentum. However, the proposal has not been approved by Israeli leaders, and it is uncertain if Hamas would be open to it.

The U.S. is hopeful that the death of Hamas’ leader could create an opportunity for negotiations, but there is uncertainty regarding who is currently in charge of Hamas to negotiate on its behalf. The situation is evolving, and updates are expected. Raf Sanchez reported from Tel Aviv, and Chantal Da Silva from London.
