Anger spreads over alleged on-campus rape as Pakistani police use tear gas on protesting students

The Federal Investigation Agency in Pakistan has registered cases against 36 people accused of spreading misinformation about a recent alleged rape case on social media. Despite authorities denying the assault and the victim’s parents also refuting the claims, Punjab police are urging people to share any information about the incident. Protesters, including student Mauz Ullah, are demanding justice for the woman and questioning the changing positions of the college and police regarding the alleged assault. Student unions have been banned in Pakistan since 1984, but some are calling for their reinstatement to help address issues like sexual abuse on campuses. Rights groups such as Aurat Foundation have criticized the handling of sensitive matters by Pakistani police and media, suggesting they exacerbate problems rather than solving them.

According to the Sustainable Social Development Organization, there were 7,010 reported rape cases in Pakistan in 2023, with most occurring in Punjab. However, underreporting due to social stigmas may mean the actual number of cases is much higher. The recent protests come in the wake of another high-profile rape case where a woman was gang-raped during a polio vaccination drive in Sindh province. Despite three arrests, the victim’s husband threw her out of their home, claiming she had tarnished the family name. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges in addressing sexual violence in Pakistan.
