2 fatalities reported following a hydrogen sulfide leak at a Pemex facility near Houston

Two people died and over two dozen were treated after a hydrogen sulfide leak at a Pemex facility in Deer Park, a Houston suburb. Workers were fixing a flange when the leak occurred, leading to the deaths of two individuals and the treatment of 35 employees. A shelter-in-place order was issued as a precaution, but was later lifted after air monitoring found no hazardous pollutants. Pemex stated that the incident was contained to their site and that they were monitoring air quality with no offsite impacts reported. The facility is located at a Shell refinery site, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is aware of the incident. Houston, a major petrochemical hub, has a concentration of refineries and plants, making incidents like this not uncommon in the area.
