Biden criticizes Trump as ‘un-American’ and calls for Congress to expedite hurricane aid • Georgia Recorder

President Joe Biden is urging Congress to end its recess early and return to Capitol Hill to approve emergency funding for hurricane recovery, despite the lack of a supplemental request from his budget office. Biden criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for spreading misinformation about the federal government’s response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. He emphasized that the $750 payment from FEMA is not the only aid available to those affected by the hurricanes.

Hurricanes Helene and Milton have caused devastation in multiple states, resulting in over 230 deaths. Biden highlighted the urgent need for emergency funding for the Small Business Administration to provide assistance to natural disaster survivors. While FEMA currently has sufficient funding, the SBA is in need of immediate financial support.

Biden called for Congress to reconvene and address the emergency funding needs, as recovery efforts are projected to cost billions of dollars. However, Congress is not scheduled to return until November 12, and no supplemental spending request has been sent by the White House budget office.

Misinformation and disinformation about natural disaster recovery have been circulating through various channels, including social media and podcasts. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell expressed concern about combating rumors and lies in the aftermath of natural disasters. Despite Trump’s claims that FEMA lacks funding due to noncitizens, FEMA clarified that disaster relief funds are dedicated solely to disaster response efforts.
