Israel continued its strikes in southern Lebanon on the third day of the offensive. The strikes came after Hezbollah confirmed the death of one of its senior commanders in an airstrike on Beirut. Lebanese media reported casualties from the airstrikes carried out by Israel targeting various areas in the south.
Since the offensive began, over 500 people have been killed and nearly 2,000 wounded in Lebanon. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region. The United Kingdom urged its nationals to evacuate Lebanon and positioned troops in Cyprus to assist with evacuations.
The UN Security Council scheduled a meeting to discuss the conflict, with Secretary General António Guterres warning that Lebanon is on the brink. US President Joe Biden called for a diplomatic solution and emphasized the importance of avoiding a full-scale war.
Lebanon’s foreign minister criticized Biden’s response and stressed that the US is the key to resolving the situation. Displaced families in Lebanon sought shelter in overcrowded schools, makeshift shelters, and cars while waiting in traffic to escape the conflict.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the attacks have weakened Hezbollah and pledged to continue the offensive. Meanwhile, Hezbollah retaliated by launching rockets at Israeli military bases. Suspected Israeli missiles were also launched at a Syrian port city, escalating tensions in the region.
Overall, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has led to a significant loss of life and displacement in Lebanon, with fears of further destabilization in the region. International efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have been unsuccessful so far, as both sides continue to exchange fire.
