Over 550 killed in Israeli strikes causes mass exodus from southern Lebanon

Tens of thousands of people fled southern Lebanon as Israel intensified its aerial assault, resulting in the deadliest day for the country since the 2006 war with Hezbollah. Nearly 500 people were killed on Monday, with the death toll rising to at least 558 by Tuesday. Israel expanded its attacks after mounting hostilities with Hezbollah, prompting residents in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate. Scenes of families fleeing and fiery explosions raised fears of a regional conflict. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell described the situation as “almost in a full-fledged war.” Israel continued its bombardment, striking Hezbollah targets as part of “Operation Northern Arrows,” while Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel. Israel vowed to continue its attacks until its offensive in Gaza ends, aiming to ensure the safe return of Israelis and push Hezbollah forces back from the border. The IDF stated that a halt in fire from Hezbollah would not be enough to end the strikes, indicating that the campaign would only conclude once Israel’s goals were achieved.
