The Senate unanimously passed the Enhanced Presidential Security Act, which aims to boost Secret Service protection for presidential candidates. This bill would provide former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris with the same level of protection given to President Joe Biden. It gives the Secret Service discretion on how to implement measures to reach this level of protection. The legislation was introduced in the House by Reps. Mike Lawler and Ritchie Torres, and brought to the Senate by Sen. Rick Scott.
This comes after an apparent second assassination attempt on Trump and Biden’s call for increased Secret Service assistance. Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe stated that Trump already receives the highest level of protection, similar to Biden. However, he acknowledged the need for a new approach in protecting presidents. The House is considering a broader spending measure that includes an additional $231 million for the Secret Service.
Trump accused the Justice Department of downplaying the alleged assassination plot against him in Florida, where he was previously shot in the ear during a campaign rally. The bill’s passage shows strong bipartisan support for enhancing presidential security measures and ensuring the safety of all candidates.
