Sri Lanka Secures a 63-Run Victory Over New Zealand in First Test Match at Galle

Prabath Jayasuriya led Sri Lanka to a 63-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test match at Galle International Stadium, taking five wickets in the final innings. Despite Rachin Ravindra’s impressive knock of 92, New Zealand’s batters struggled with the sharp turn and low bounce at the venue, ultimately falling short in their chase of 275 runs. Jayasuriya’s stellar performance earned him the player of the match award, with captain Dhananjaya de Silva praising the team’s ability to win Tests following a recent victory in England.

New Zealand began the final day needing 68 runs with two wickets remaining, but Sri Lanka quickly wrapped up the match within four overs. Jayasuriya dismissed Ravindra and William O’Rourke to secure the victory for Sri Lanka. New Zealand captain Tim Southee acknowledged the team’s disappointment but noted there were positives to take from the match.

Jayasuriya, who claimed his eighth five-wicket haul, credited his success to focusing on a consistent line and length on the Galle pitch. The second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will also take place in Galle starting on Thursday. Sri Lanka will look to build on their momentum and secure another win in the series.
