Former President Donald Trump has accused the Department of Justice and FBI of mishandling and downplaying a second assassination attempt on his life. Trump claimed that the charges brought against the suspect were too lenient and accused the agencies of having a conflict of interest due to their alleged obsession with “getting Trump.” In response, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has announced that the state will open its own investigation into the incident, which occurred at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach. Trump stated that if the DOJ and FBI cannot handle the case impartially, Florida should take the lead in investigating and prosecuting the suspect.
Meanwhile, Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance made a campaign speech in North Carolina, proclaiming the state as crucial for turning the country red. Bishop, a candidate for attorney general in North Carolina, also voiced support for Trump and Vance. In Pennsylvania, Trump discussed using tariffs on Chinese goods and his plans to counter US reliance on China. Additionally, Vance has tapped Representative Tom Emmer to help with debate preparation for his upcoming face-off against Governor Tim Walz.
In another development, efforts by Trump and his allies to change Nebraska’s electoral vote allocation system from congressional district-based to winner-take-all have faced opposition from a key legislator and have not progressed. The move, intended to benefit Trump, has been rejected for the time being by the Nebraska lawmaker, citing the proximity to the upcoming election as not conducive to making such changes.
