The U.S. Secret Service has taken responsibility for the failures in the July assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. Acting Director Ronald Rowe briefed reporters on the agency’s findings, which revealed communication deficiencies and complacency among staff members. The agency is seeking more resources to prevent future failures and enhance protective operations.
Following a second attempt on Trump’s life in Florida, the U.S. House passed a measure to grant presidential and vice presidential candidates the same security level as officeholders. A bipartisan congressional task force is expanding its purview to investigate both assassination attempts. The agency has been providing increased protection for presidential candidates since the July attempt in Pennsylvania.
Rowe emphasized the need to be prepared for ongoing threats and argued for additional resources to ensure the agency can meet new requirements. He did not disclose the exact dollar amount being requested but said conversations with congressional appropriators are ongoing. Rowe was appointed as acting director after former Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in response to the July attempt on Trump’s life.
The agency’s offices of Integrity and Professional Responsibility will decide on any disciplinary action for those involved in the failures. Rowe stressed the importance of accountability and the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety of protected individuals.
