Family and friends are grieving the tragic deaths of Washington state couple Ilya and Sophia Tsaruk, who died while snorkeling on vacation in Hawaii. Ilya and Sophia were found unresponsive near Āhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve on Maui. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, with Sophia being pregnant at the time.
Ilya’s brother Anatoliy Tsaruk shared that the couple was on a babymoon with two other couples when the incident occurred. They were wearing full-face snorkel masks, but the cause of their deaths remains unclear. The surviving 18-month-old son, who was not with them at the time, is being looked after by family members.
The couple’s family has organized a celebration of life and a burial service in Washington to honor Ilya and Sophia. They had been eagerly preparing for the arrival of their unborn daughter and were excited about the future. The family is devastated by the loss and is struggling to make sense of the tragedy.
The Maui County Fire Department responded to the incident, but it is unclear if the local police are investigating the deaths. The community is coming together to support the Tsaruk family during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of two young lives.
