Israel claims assassination of prominent Hezbollah member in precise airstrike in Beirut.

The Lebanese National News Agency reported that an Israeli warplane launched missiles targeting an apartment in the southern suburb of the capital. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) struck southern Lebanon, hitting about 100 Hezbollah launchers and other infrastructure sites. Hezbollah responded by bombing an air defense base and military barracks in northern Israel. The IDF intercepted approximately 140 launches from Lebanon into Israeli territory.

Hezbollah leader Nasrallah accused Israel of an act of war against Lebanon but did not specify how or when his group would retaliate. Israeli warplanes were seen flying over Beirut, creating a sonic boom. The escalation led to calls for restraint from the United Nations peacekeeping force in south Lebanon and the U.N. Security Council.

Despite Israel not claiming responsibility for the attacks, questions remained about how they were able to plant explosives in thousands of pagers distributed among Hezbollah operatives. Companies from Taiwan and Japan that were linked to the devices denied involvement. Hungarian officials said a trading intermediary was responsible for the devices. Taiwan’s Economy Minister confirmed that the parts in the pagers were not made locally. Bulgaria’s state security agency also denied involvement in the distribution of the pagers.

The White House expressed concern about the potential escalation in the region and called for an achievable and urgent diplomatic solution. The events have raised fears of a broader regional conflict, with thousands of people displaced on both sides of the border. The situation has led to growing tensions and uncertainty in the region.
