Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori has passed away at the age of 86 after a long battle with cancer. Fujimori, who was known for stabilising Peru’s economy and cracking down on rebel groups during his presidency, had been serving a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses before being released on humanitarian grounds in December.
Fujimori, the son of Japanese immigrants, rose to power in 1990 after defeating establishment favourite Mario Vargas Llosa in a run-off election. During his tenure, Fujimori was credited with ending hyperinflation and promoting economic growth, but his administration was also marked by accusations of undemocratic practices and human rights violations.
In 2000, Fujimori fled Peru after a corruption scandal involving his intelligence chief and later submitted his resignation by fax machine while in exile in Japan, where he held citizenship. He attempted a political comeback in Chile in 2005 but was eventually extradited to Peru to face trial for crimes committed by his government.
In 2009, Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in a massacre carried out by death squads. Despite his controversial legacy, his daughter Keiko Fujimori announced earlier this year that he planned to run for president again in 2026.
The announcement of Fujimori’s death was made by his daughter Keiko, who asked for prayers for his soul. His passing marks the end of a tumultuous chapter in Peruvian politics and reignites discussions about his complex legacy.
