Harris and Trump both present at 9/11 ceremony following debut debate

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump shook hands at a 9/11 memorial ceremony after their first presidential debate. The ceremony was attended by President Joe Biden and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg. During the event, a woman criticized Biden for making a flippant remark about “doing 9/11.” Biden and Harris were there to honor the lives lost and support the families affected. Trump and his vice presidential nominee, JD Vance, visited a fire station and the offices of a company that lost employees in the attacks. Harris and Biden later traveled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Flight 93 memorial. It is believed that the passengers on that flight prevented an attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump is also expected to visit the memorial. Harris and Biden had additional 9/11 events scheduled at the Pentagon. Presidential candidates traditionally refrain from campaigning on 9/11. In previous years, candidates have attended memorials together. In 2020, Trump and Biden visited memorial sites, with Biden consoling family members and Trump delivering a speech. In 2021, Biden visited all three memorial sites, while Trump visited a police station and a firehouse. Trump made a video statement marking the anniversary, expressing that “we will never forget.”
