Former Georgia Elected Officials from Both Parties Validate State’s Election System: Georgia Recorder

A bipartisan group of former Georgia elected officials gathered at an Atlanta Press Club event to emphasize the importance of restoring trust in the state’s elections ahead of the Nov. 5 election. Former Gov. Nathan Deal, Gov. Roy Barnes, Sen. Saxby Chambliss, and Mayor Shirley Franklin, members of the Democracy Defense Project, are working to combat misinformation surrounding the electoral process.
Deal called on the Republican Party to address leadership spreading distrust in elections without credible evidence. The group highlighted the need to build confidence in Georgia’s election system to prevent a repeat of the tensions seen following the 2020 presidential election, which culminated in a violent riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Chambliss emphasized the integrity of Georgia’s vote tally, pointing to the presence of trained election officials, poll workers, and partisan poll monitors ensuring a fair process. Franklin, inspired by her experiences in politics, aims to use her influence to quell distrust in elections among Black voters and minorities.
The group’s efforts come in the wake of failed attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, where Trump narrowly lost to Biden. The former officials stressed the fundamental importance of fair and transparent elections in upholding democracy and the country’s values. With the first presidential debate since Biden dropped out set to take place, the group’s message on restoring trust in elections is timely and crucial.
