Iraq to implement two-day curfew for first census in decades | News

Iraq will be imposing a two-day curfew in November for the country’s first census in 27 years, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced on Sunday. This decision comes after several postponements of the census, with the most recent delay in 2010 due to tensions over disputed territories. The last general census was conducted in 1997 in 15 Iraqi provinces, excluding the three northern provinces of the Kurdistan region.

The upcoming census will be conducted with the support of multiple ministries and the Kurdistan Regional Government for the training of statistical staff. The process aims to provide accurate demographic information to facilitate effective policymaking and promote inclusive growth in Iraq, which has been ravaged by decades of conflict and violence.

Despite sporadic violence and political turmoil, Iraq has seen some stability in recent years, with an estimated population of about 43 million. The census initiative has been partnered with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which has emphasized the importance of the census in equipping Iraq with accurate demographic data.

In the past, Iraq held a census every 10 years, but the count could not be organized in 2007 due to sectarian violence. The upcoming census is seen as a crucial step in developing the country and providing the government with essential information for effective decision-making.
