An overview of the most recent EU Commission nominations

As the deadline for nominations for the European Commissioner positions approached on 30 August, key candidates from various EU member states have emerged.

Bulgaria has put forward former Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva and former Ecology Minister Julian Popov as its candidates for European Commissioner. This decision follows discussions between Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev and makes Bulgaria the only country to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s request for both male and female candidates.

Italy has announced Raffaele Fitto as its EU commissioner, with a long political career that began in Puglia. Fitto, born in 1969, has held various political positions, including as an MP in Brussels in 1999, 2014, and 2019.

Denmark has nominated Dan Jørgensen, a social democrat, to be part of von der Leyen’s new team of EU commissioners. Jørgensen, who previously served as a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2013, is part of a wider cabinet reshuffle announced by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Belgium, however, has not yet elected a commissioner due to ongoing political turmoil. Despite von der Leyen’s push for gender balance in the commissioner appointments, Belgium is expected to nominate a male candidate, with only a few female candidates nominated from other countries so far.
