As Labor Day weekend approaches, the Georgia Department of Public Safety is reminding drivers to stay safe on the roads. With thousands of Georgians expected to travel over the holiday weekend, the Georgia State Patrol and Motor Carrier Compliance Division Officers will be conducting high visibility patrols to ensure motorists’ safety.
Last year, during the Labor Day holiday period, there were 552 crashes and 26 fatalities across the state, with 379 drivers arrested for driving under the influence. With AAA projecting a 9% increase in travel this year, there is a higher potential for accidents.
The 78-hour holiday travel period begins on Friday, August 30th at 6 p.m. and ends on Monday, September 2nd at 11:59 p.m. Authorities will be focusing on seatbelt compliance, speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving—behaviors that significantly contribute to road accidents.
To ensure a safe journey, drivers are advised to observe speed limits, follow traffic laws, avoid impairment, ensure seatbelt use, and minimize distractions. Planning trips around peak travel times can also help avoid heavy traffic.
Throughout the holiday weekend, the Department of Public Safety will provide updates on traffic conditions. Georgians are encouraged to stay informed and make safe driving decisions to enjoy a safe and pleasant holiday weekend.
