Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Friday that he is suspending his campaign and throwing his support behind former President Donald Trump. Kennedy, an environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine activist, made the announcement in Phoenix, Arizona, after having collected a million signatures during his long-shot presidential bid. He stated that he could not in good conscience continue his campaign without a clear path to the White House.
Kennedy clarified that his name will remain on the ballot in most states, but he will remove it from about 10 battleground states where his presence could be a spoiler. The Democratic Party of Georgia had challenged his candidacy, along with three other third-party candidates, on the grounds of flawed signatures and application processes.
Trump thanked Kennedy for his support during a campaign event in Las Vegas, calling him a “great guy” respected by everybody. Kennedy, a member of the storied Kennedy family in Democratic politics, has faced financial troubles and declining polling numbers throughout his campaign. His decision to support Trump comes just after Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination.
Harris-Walz campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon stated that their campaign is about bringing people together and fighting for working Americans, in response to Kennedy suspending his campaign. Trump is set to speak in Arizona later that day, with a special guest joining him at the rally.
