The Islamic State claimed responsibility for a knife attack in Germany that killed three people and injured eight others in the city of Solingen during a celebration. The attacker targeted Christians and the Islamic State stated that he carried out the attack to avenge Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere. Authorities are still searching for the attacker and do not have a description or identity to share. A 15-year-old was detained in possible connection with the attack, but investigators believe he may not be the attacker, but rather had prior knowledge of the incident. Another person was arrested later in the day and their connection to the attack is being investigated.
The police do not believe there was a concrete threat before the festival, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed shock at the killings and called for the perpetrator to be quickly caught and punished. The Mayor of Solingen expressed sadness and mourning for the victims, stating that he prays for those still fighting for their lives. The city is in shock and grief over the attack that occurred during what was supposed to be a celebration of the city’s anniversary. The manhunt for the attacker is ongoing and authorities are conducting multiple searches and investigations in an effort to bring the perpetrator to justice.
