During the Democratic National Convention, the Exonerated Five, previously known as the Central Park Five, criticized Donald Trump for not apologizing for calling for their execution when they were falsely accused of raping a jogger in Central Park in 1989. Yusef Salaam, now a member of New York City Council, claimed that Trump wanted them dead and still stands by the original guilty verdict, despite the actual perpetrator confessing and DNA evidence proving their innocence. The men spent years in prison before their convictions were vacated in 2002, and New York City later paid them $41 million in a legal settlement. Despite this, Trump has maintained that they admitted guilt and has refused to retract his call for their execution. At the convention, the Exonerated Five highlighted the impact of Trump’s actions on them, with Korey Wise describing how their time was “stolen” and how they were threatened in the courtroom because of Trump. However, Wise also praised Kamala Harris for working towards fairness and called on her to prove that message as president. The Exonerated Five’s appearance at the convention brought attention to the injustice they faced and the lack of accountability from Trump for his role in their wrongful conviction.
