Former high school football coach selected as running mate as Walz accepts VP nomination • Georgia Recorder

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz became the Democratic nominee for vice president at the Democratic National Convention. Walz, a former teacher, coach, and Army National Guardsman, was selected by Vice President Kamala Harris as her running mate just over two weeks ago. In his speech, he emphasized Democratic policies as more aligned with heartland values compared to those of Republicans, led by the ticket of former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance.

Walz highlighted the freedom Democrats seek to expand, including the freedom to make life better and healthcare decisions. He also criticized Republican restrictions on reproductive rights and environmental protections. Walz’s folksy appeal and policy wins as governor were praised by fellow Democrats, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

He condemned the Republican agenda which includes cuts to Social Security and Medicare, repeal of Obamacare, and nationwide abortion restrictions. Walz positioned Democrats as the party of common sense, calling for limits on gun rights to keep children safe. He urged delegates to work tirelessly until Election Day to support Harris and himself.

Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the convention, endorsing Harris and Walz as candidates who can bring decency and respect to politics. She urged voters to base their decision on the candidates’ character and criticized the Republican loyalty to Trump. Winfrey emphasized an inclusive vision of politics, rejecting Vance’s derogatory remarks about Democratic voters. The convention ended with cheers from the crowd, energized by Walz’s acceptance and Winfrey’s endorsement.
