Body of Mike Lynch found off the coast of Sicily

The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was recovered from a superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily, along with four others, after a freak storm hit the boat early Monday. Rescuers were still searching for Lynch’s daughter and three others who were on board. Salvage efforts were hampered by the depth of the wreck and debris blocking diver access. Lynch, known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was a fellow of the U.K.’s Royal Academy of Engineering and was involved in a high-profile U.S. fraud trial earlier this summer. Also missing were Lynch’s associates, including the chairman of Morgan Stanley International and a well-known defense attorney. The vessel was hit by a waterspout, causing it to sink a half-mile offshore, leaving divers to search the yacht’s hull 164 feet underwater. The dock in Porticello, where the rescuers brought ashore the bodies, has been crowded with journalists and onlookers. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered shortly after the accident, while 15 of the 22 people on board survived. Lynch’s death is a tragic loss, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
