A record-breaking 2,492-carat diamond discovered in Botswana, largest in more than 100 years

The biggest diamond found in over a century was unearthed at a mine in Botswana, weighing 2,492 carats and second only to the famous Cullinan Diamond discovered in 1905. Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi displayed the fist-sized stone at a viewing ceremony, exclaiming “wow” at its size and quality. The diamond, found by Lucara Diamond Corp. using X-ray technology, is yet to be valued or sold. Botswana, the world’s second-biggest producer of natural diamonds, has already unearthed some of the largest stones in recent years. The same mine has produced four other diamonds over 1,000 carats in the last decade. Previous notable finds include the Sewelo diamond at 1,758 carats and the Lesedi La Rona diamond at 1,111 carats, which were both sold for millions of dollars. Diamonds are formed over billions of years deep underground when carbon atoms are squeezed together under high pressure. This rare discovery adds to Botswana’s reputation as a major player in the diamond industry and showcases its rich diamond-producing potential. The impressive find marks a historic moment in the country’s mining history and has attracted global attention for its size, quality, and potential value.
