Zelenskyy announces Ukraine’s control of more than 1,250 square kilometers in Kursk region

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces now control 92 settlements in the Kursk region as well as over 1,250 square kilometers of Russian territory. This operation has also resulted in the largest number of Russian prisoners being captured in a single operation. Zelenskyy stated that this is the country’s biggest effort to free Ukrainians from Russian captivity and could potentially lead to a prisoner exchange.

He emphasized the effectiveness of Ukraine’s defensive actions across the border, highlighting Putin’s inability to defend against these efforts. Zelenskyy also mentioned the evacuation of over 121,000 people from the Kursk region and the opening of 84 temporary accommodation centers to support those who have been displaced.

Furthermore, Zelenskyy revealed that the aim of the military incursion into the Kursk region is to create a “buffer zone” to prevent further attacks by Moscow. He expressed a desire for Ukraine’s partners to lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons on Russian territory, which could potentially eliminate the need for physical incursions into Russian territory to protect Ukrainian citizens.

The ongoing situation in the Kursk region underscores the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with Zelenskyy making it clear that Ukraine is taking proactive measures to defend its citizens and prevent further aggression from Russia.
