The Democratic National Convention is set to kick off in Chicago with a strong Georgia presence, as the state will provide 108 pledged delegates and 15 superdelegates in support of Vice President Kamala Harris. Recent conventions have featured Georgia speakers like Stacey Abrams and Jason Carter, and this year’s event will bring in major Democratic players from across the country.
Harris took the top spot on the ticket following President Joe Biden’s announcement of not seeking re-election, with no challengers emerging for the nomination. Despite Republican criticism of the candidate swap, polls show increased Democratic chances in swing states, including Georgia.
Georgia Democratic activists like Parker Short express high enthusiasm for Harris’ candidacy and compare the energy to that seen in the 2021 U.S. Senate runoffs. On the other hand, Georgia Republican Chair Joshua McKoon believes the enthusiasm is just a “sugar high” that will eventually crash.
The Harris effect is expected to have a lasting impact on the race in Georgia, with her campaign targeting the state for a potential win in November. Harris has also rolled out her first detailed economic policy proposal ahead of the convention as she focuses on building a strong campaign team and flawless get-out-the-vote operation in Georgia.
While the convention may bring glamour and speeches, the real work behind the scenes will be crucial for Harris and her chances of winning Georgia in the upcoming election.
