Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has revealed that the military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region is intended to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks from Moscow. The operation, launched on 6 August, was initially said to be aimed at protecting communities in the Sumy region from shelling.
Zelenskiy stated in a recent address that the primary goal of defensive operations is to destroy Russian war potential and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions. This includes creating a buffer zone on Russian territory in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian forces pushed into Russia with tanks and armoured vehicles, surprising the Kremlin and causing chaos as civilians fled the area.
Ukraine’s commander in chief claimed that Ukrainian forces had advanced across 1,000 square kilometers of the region, although the extent of territory under Ukrainian control is uncertain. Zelenskiy expressed satisfaction with the results achieved by Ukrainian forces in creating a buffer zone.
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously stated that Russia’s offensive in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region aimed to create a buffer zone in response to Ukrainian shelling of Russia’s Belgorod region. Putin had warned that if the shelling continued, Russia would be forced to create a security zone. The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, with both sides seeking to establish buffer zones to protect their territories.
