Israeli settlers carried out a deadly attack on the village of Jit in the West Bank, killing one Palestinian man and injuring others. The attack involved masked settlers firing at residents, setting cars on fire, and destroying property. This incident is part of a surge in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank during the Gaza war, with nearly 600 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces and settlers. Rights groups have criticized Israel for allowing such attacks to occur with impunity.
The attack on Jit has drawn condemnation from Palestinian authorities, Hamas, Israel, the US, the EU, the UK, France, and the UN. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called it “organised state terrorism,” while Hamas condemned it as part of Israel’s “fascist extermination plans.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, saying those responsible will be apprehended and tried. The US and the EU called for an end to settler violence, while the UK and France expressed outrage and called for swift investigations into the incident.
The UN has also condemned the violence, with the spokesperson for the UN’s human rights office stating that settler attacks are a direct consequence of Israel’s settlement policy in the West Bank. The UN’s special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories called for sanctions to be imposed on Israel, stating that the time to act is now. Israeli peace group Peace Now described the incident as “settler terrorism,” supported by the state. The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the region and the need for international intervention to protect Palestinian civilians.
