The area, known for its stunning beauty and rolling hills, has been home to Palestinians practicing subsistence farming and animal herding for generations. Despite facing multiple expulsions by Israeli authorities, the residents of Susya have remained resilient and continue to cling to their ancestral land.
In recent months, settlers have escalated their attacks on the village, including threatening and assaulting residents, destroying property, and even kidnapping young shepherds like Khalil. The settlers act with impunity, knowing that their actions are rarely punished by the authorities. This has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty for the villagers, who feel trapped in an “unbearable” situation.
The international community and human rights organizations have condemned the violence and called for greater protection for the Palestinians in the West Bank. However, the situation remains dire, with little hope of immediate relief for the residents of Susya and other vulnerable communities in the region.
