Famous Amos cookie founder, Wally Amos, passes away at age 88

Wallace “Wally” Amos, the creator of the Famous Amos cookie empire, passed away at the age of 88 in Honolulu. Despite losing ownership of his company and the rights to use his name, Amos continued to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, including a cookie shop called Chip & Cookie in Hawaii. He died from complications related to dementia, surrounded by his family.

Amos was recognized as a great American success story and source of Black pride, inspiring a generation of entrepreneurs with his cookie store on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Although he faced struggles in the business world and eventually lost control of Famous Amos, he remained resilient and created Uncle Wally’s Muffin Co. as a new venture.

Throughout his life, Amos was dedicated to promoting literacy. He wrote books, served as a spokesperson for Literacy Volunteers of America, and gave motivational speeches. His commitment to reading was evident in his Hawaii cookie shop, where he had a reading room for children and spent time reading to them.

Despite his business setbacks, Amos remained passionate about baking and launched multiple ventures after parting ways with Famous Amos. His children, who remember baking cookies with him, reflect on the meaningful legacy he left behind. Born in Tallahassee, Florida, Amos moved to New York City at a young age and eventually became a successful entrepreneur and advocate for literacy.
