The Divine Nine: An Untapped Voting Bloc Harris Holds Access To

Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is shining a spotlight on Black Greek organizations, specifically the Divine Nine, with her being the first presidential nominee to come from one of these organizations. Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest Black sorority in the country, has rallied behind Harris, forming a political action committee to support her. Leaders like Deidra Davis see this as an opportunity to strengthen voter registration efforts and encourage civic engagement within the community.

Black Greek organizations were originally formed after Black people were excluded from white Greek groups and have since developed a strong cultural influence. Harris’ membership in AKA has been highlighted as a defense against race-centered attacks and has been a source of pride for both Black people and members of Black Greek organizations. Her campaign has tapped into this cultural significance by engaging with members of different Divine Nine organizations and highlighting the unity among them.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, the governing body for the Divine Nine, is a nonpartisan organization that doesn’t officially endorse candidates but recognizes the influence of the Divine Nine as a voting bloc. Members see their commitment to these organizations as a lifelong dedication to service and civic engagement, and are excited to showcase the impact they can have on elections and in helping to improve the lives of Black Americans.
