Google reports attempted Iranian hacking of Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns

Google released a research report revealing that Iranian hackers targeted both the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns in May and June as part of a larger email phishing operation. The Trump campaign had claimed to have been hacked by Iranians to interfere with the election, which Google’s report supported. The hackers, tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, targeted personal email accounts of individuals affiliated with both campaigns. Google blocked login attempts to these accounts and secured a high-profile political consultant’s Gmail account that was accessed by the hackers.

The Iranian hacking operation also targeted U.S. and Israeli entities using Google products like Sites, Drive, and Gmail. Microsoft previously reported that a senior adviser to a presidential campaign was also hacked by hackers affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard. The FBI is investigating hacking attempts on both the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns, but no major cybersecurity company or government agency has confirmed successful hacks on the Trump campaign.

The events highlight ongoing foreign interference in the U.S. election, particularly from Iran. The culprits are known for their persistence and continue to target accounts associated with Biden, Harris, and Trump. Although Harris’s campaign denies any knowledge of security breaches, the threat of hacking remains a serious concern as the election approaches. It is essential for political campaigns and individuals involved in the election process to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from cyberattacks.
