Businessman Eric Hovde won the Wisconsin Republican primary for the Senate, setting up a critical battleground-state race against Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin. This race is crucial for both parties in the battle for control of the closely divided Senate. Baldwin, seeking a third term, has built a solid campaign war chest and showcased appeal in rural areas. Hovde, who has the financial backing of former President Donald Trump, aims to unseat Baldwin by leveraging his own wealth and experience.
In other election news, Democratic Rep. Rebecca Cooke won the primary in Wisconsin’s 3rd District, advancing against GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden, who flipped the seat in 2020. Members of Congress in Minnesota survived their primaries, with Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar defeating challengers in a solidly blue district. GOP Rep. Michelle Fischbach also emerged victorious in a primary in Minnesota’s 7th District.
Democratic Rep. Angie Craig will face Marine veteran Joe Teirab in Minnesota’s battleground 2nd District in November. Former NBA player Royce White won the crowded GOP primary in Minnesota to challenge Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a tough opponent who has consistently won by wide margins in previous races.
In Connecticut, Rep. Jahana Hayes will face former state Sen. George Logan in the 5th District, while Sen. Chris Murphy is favored to win the general election. Republican Gov. Phil Scott and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders are expected to have smooth paths to re-election in Vermont.
