Five individuals in New Hampshire diagnosed with Legionnaires’ Disease following potential exposure from a cooling tower

Five people in Lincoln, New Hampshire developed Legionnaires’ disease in June and July after possible exposure to contaminated water droplets from a cooling tower located behind the RiverWalk Resort. Testing confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in the cooling tower. Four of the individuals were hospitalized but have since recovered. Remediation work, including mechanical cleaning and disinfection of the cooling system, is ongoing to address the contamination. Legionella bacteria, which can cause Legionnaires’ disease, can be found naturally in bodies of water but poses a threat when it spreads in building water systems like cooling towers. Most people catch the disease by inhaling the bacteria in water droplets or mist, with symptoms including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Those at higher risk for developing the disease include older individuals, smokers, people with weakened immune systems, and those with certain medical conditions. Legionnaires’ disease can be fatal if left untreated. The public is warned to monitor themselves for symptoms if they have visited the area near the contaminated cooling tower, and to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms of pneumonia within 14 days. RiverWalk Resort is working with health officials to ensure the safety of guests and the community.
