The former President Donald Trump’s campaign revealed that it had been hacked by an Iranian group in June, around the time that Trump was choosing a Vice Presidential nominee. This was reported by Politico, who received documents from an anonymous source in July which included research papers on potential running mates, such as Ohio Sen. JD Vance. The Trump campaign stated that these documents were obtained illegally by a foreign entity in an attempt to interfere with the 2024 election and disrupt the democratic process. Microsoft released a report linking the hack to an Iranian group associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The FBI is aware of the situation, but has not commented further. The Iranian government denied any involvement in election interference. Politico tried to inquire about the source of the leaked documents, but the anonymous emailer refused to disclose any information. The Trump campaign condemned the publication of these documents, stating that it plays into the hands of America’s enemies. The Trump campaign urged media outlets not to reproduce the leaked information. The incident raises concerns about potential foreign interference in US elections and highlights the need for cybersecurity measures to protect against hacking attempts.
