Several witnesses described a drone attack on Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar, resulting in the deaths of many, including families with children. The attack took place as families were waiting to cross the border into Bangladesh. Videos posted on social media showed piles of bodies scattered on the ground, with suitcases and backpacks nearby. Three survivors estimated that more than 200 people had died in the attack, with some witnesses reporting seeing at least 70 bodies. One witness, Mohammed Eleyas, recounted how his pregnant wife and 2-year-old daughter were wounded and later died in the attack. Another witness, Shamsuddin, described how he survived with his wife and newborn son, witnessing the aftermath of the attack where many were injured and in pain. The Arakan Army denied responsibility for the attack, as did Myanmar’s military, both blaming each other. The exact number of casualties and the responsible party could not be independently verified by Reuters. The attack took place near the town of Maungdaw in Rakhine state, where the ongoing conflict between junta troops and rebels has resulted in civilian casualties. The survivors of the attack are now in refugee camps in Bangladesh, trying to cope with the loss of their loved ones and the trauma of the brutal attack.
