Gender controversy shadows Lin Yu-ting’s gold medal win in boxing

She won by unanimous decision, with judges scoring all three rounds 10-9 in her favor. Lin, from Chinese Taipei, faced scrutiny along with welterweight gold medalist Imane Khelif, both falsely accused of being transgender or intersex. These accusations were based on flawed eligibility tests conducted by the International Boxing Association in 2022 and 2023, the details of which have not been released. IOC spokesperson Mark Adams criticized these tests as illegitimate and flawed. Both Lin and Khelif have competed in women’s events for years, including at the Tokyo Olympics, with no indication that they identify as transgender or intersex. Despite the controversy surrounding their eligibility, both fighters have successfully competed in and won gold in their respective weight classes.
