Emergency and disaster declarations issued in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania due to the flooding caused by Debby

The East Coast was hit with severe weather from the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby, causing dangerous flash flooding and the threat of tornadoes. Flood warnings and watches were in place from the Carolinas to New England, where Vermont was bracing for extreme weather. More than 35 million people were under flood watches or warnings, prompting emergency declarations from governors in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Major flooding occurred in areas of Pennsylvania and New York, leading to evacuations and swift-water rescues. Record rainfall was reported in various areas, with over 362,000 utility customers without power and thousands of flights canceled or delayed. Train services were also impacted, with downed trees causing delays.

Despite weakening, Debby continued to produce significant rainfall, with coastal flood warnings along the Mid-Atlantic coast. Multiple rescues were conducted in South Carolina due to flooding. The storm was moving northeast, bringing low temperatures for August to various parts of the country.

Overall, at least seven deaths were reported as a result of Debby’s impact, with authorities urging caution and adherence to emergency management instructions. The storm’s main threat remained to be the potential for excessive rainfall and flooding in affected areas.
