Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has agreed to participate in a debate with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris on Sept. 10, after previously stating he would not take part. Trump also confirmed debates on Sept. 4 and Sept. 25, with the first debate being hosted by Fox News. The ABC News debate on Sept. 10 was originally agreed upon by Trump and President Joe Biden before Biden dropped out of the race. ABC News confirmed that both Trump and Harris have agreed to the network’s debate.
During a press conference at his Mar-A-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump emphasized the importance of debates while also taking shots at Harris. The Harris campaign called Trump’s press conference a “public meltdown” but did not confirm her participation in the other debates. The 2021 transfer of power from Trump to Biden was described as chaotic and violent, with the Capitol riot on Jan. 6 leading to Congress impeaching Trump for inciting the insurrection.
Trump’s comments on the Jan. 6 attack were criticized for downplaying the deaths of two police officers and a rioter. Trump also expressed concerns about the treatment of individuals charged in connection with the riot. Despite facing backlash, Trump assured that there would be a peaceful transfer of power if he were to lose the election, emphasizing the importance of honest elections.
