Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has launched a new initiative called “Republicans for Harris,” aimed at attracting moderate GOP voters and those who do not support former President Donald Trump’s reelection bid. The effort will feature prominent Republicans who will work to court moderates, independents, and Republicans who previously supported Nikki Haley over Trump. The campaign will kick off in battleground states such as Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
The National Director of Republican Outreach Austin Weatherford stated that Trump’s far-right playbook is toxic to many Republicans who no longer believe the party represents their values. Harris’ campaign is working to earn the support of Republicans who prioritize defending democracy and decency. The initiative includes a digital campaign with testimonials from Republicans supporting Harris.
Former members of Congress, former Trump officials, and former governors are among those endorsing Harris through the “Republicans for Harris” program. Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman stated, “Republicans for Harris will be an important way for us to bring the message that Donald Trump is unfit to lead our nation.” Harris has also received endorsements from unions and built coalitions like “White Dudes for Harris” and “Young Republicans for Harris.”
During a recent campaign rally, Trump attacked popular Georgia Republicans who did not support his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. However, both Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger have not given their support to Harris. The initiative aims to bring together Republicans, former Republicans, and unaffiliated voters to support Harris and prevent a second term for Trump.
